Shoals United Stars, Incorporated (SUS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing sports and social opportunities to students and young adults with special needs across the Shoals. We’re a community united by the belief that everyone deserves a place to shine, grow, and belong, no matter their unique abilities. With nearly 50 incredible young people on our roster, representing schools throughout the area, we’re building a vibrant team that embodies inclusivity and friendship.
Our mission is simple but powerful: to create a safe, encouraging environment for special needs individuals to engage in adaptive sports, socialize, and gain real-world experience. Our Stars participate in adaptive seasons of basketball, flag football, and softball—allowing each player to experience the thrill of competition, the camaraderie of teamwork, and the joy of personal achievement. Alongside our sports programming, we offer social activities and even workplace experiences that help our Stars develop independence, confidence, and a support network of peers and mentors.

“My daughter, Kilynne, plays for Shoals United Stars, and it has been an incredible experience for her and our family. We never knew about this amazing little group until a little over a year ago, when one of Kilynne’s teachers, Ms. Murner, suggested it would be something great for her. Since joining the team, Kilynne has come out of her shell so much! She’s learned valuable skills in teamwork, taking turns, and following directions (we’re still working on that!) which has made such a positive impact on her confidence and social interactions. Shoals United Stars, INC. provides such a positive and inclusive environment for special needs students in the Shoals rea, allowing them to build friendships and experience the joy of teamwork. The coaches and staff are dedicated, compassionate, and truly invested in helping each child reach their full potential, both on and off the field. This is more than just a team for us, this is our village. We are so grateful for this community and all it does to create meaningful opportunities for these wonderful kids.”
